palmofmyhands: Nancy Elizabeth Prophet (1980-1960) was an African-American from Rhode Island. In Newport and New York, she was not allowed to appear alongside her work— being both African American and Narragansett Indian, gallery owners found her appearance “socially unacceptable”. Prophet denied galleries her artwork where she was not accepted. Prophet moved to Paris in 1922 to further her studies in sculpture - creating marble portrait sculptures that garnered attention. In 1945, Prophet returned to Rhode Island, but unfortunately receded into obscurity as lack of opportunity forced her into domestic work and poverty.
